On-Arrival Training of our volunteer: Kika and Abdullah

From March 5th to 9th, 2025, we took part in a truly enriching experience – the On-Arrival Training in Slovakia. This special week is designed for all newly arrived ESC volunteers in the country and it’s so much more than just an introduction to the program. It’s a space for learning, connection, self-discovery and inspiration.

Meeting the ESC Community

One of the most exciting parts of the week was the opportunity to meet fellow ESC volunteers from all over Slovakia. Coming from diverse backgrounds, cultures and countries, everyone brought their own unique energy and stories. Despite our differences, we quickly found common ground in our shared values and commitment to volunteering and social impact.

From the very first day, the training created a supportive environment where everyone felt welcome. Icebreakers and team-building activities helped break down barriers and fostered new friendships that many of us will carry forward long after the week ended.

Understanding the ESC Journey

The training provided in-depth sessions on the European Solidarity Corps program – its vision, opportunities and responsibilities. We also learned about Youthpass, a valuable tool that helps reflect on learning and skills gained through volunteering.

Workshops guided us to explore our personal goals, expectations and motivations. What do we hope to achieve during our volunteering experience? How can we make a positive impact in our host communities? These were just a few of the meaningful questions we explored together.

Through engaging, non-formal education methods – like group discussions, creative tasks and simulations – we gained a deeper understanding of our roles as ESC volunteers. The sessions weren’t just informative; they were fun, interactive, and thought-provoking.

Reflection and Personal Growth

Throughout the week, there was a strong emphasis on personal development. We were encouraged to reflect on our values, strengths and areas for growth. We talked about resilience, intercultural understanding and how to make the most of this life-changing journey.

There were moments for quiet reflection, deep conversation and plenty of laughter. It was clear that this week wasn’t only about information – it was about transformation. Many of us left feeling more confident, self-aware and empowered to contribute meaningfully to our local communities.

Exploring the Beauty of Slovakia

Of course, the week wasn’t all workshops and discussions – there was time to explore, relax and enjoy the natural and cultural beauty of our host country.

We took a peaceful group walk through Trenčianske Teplice, a charming spa town known for its healing waters and calm atmosphere.

Later, we visited the historical city of Trenčín, where we wandered through cobbled streets, admired panoramic views from Trenčín Castle and learned more about Slovakia’s rich cultural heritage.

These outings not only offered a break from the sessions but also helped us feel more connected to the place we now call home – even if just for a short time.

A Week to Remember

By the end of the training, it was clear that this was more than just an orientation. It was a transformative experience that left all of us inspired, energized and full of ideas for how to bring more heart, creativity and purpose to our volunteering roles.

We returned to our host communities with new friendships, fresh motivation and a deep sense of belonging within the wider ESC network.

We can’t wait to see where the rest of this ESC journey takes us!
