In celebration of World Health Week, 36 young people from Greece, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Poland and Türkiye came together in İzmir from April 8–16 for an inspiring Erasmus+ Youth Exchange project titled „Keep Your Memory Alive.“ This initiative was supported by the Turkish National Agency within the Erasmus+ Programme framework.
Focusing on Dementia and Healthy Ageing
The primary aim of the project was to raise awareness about dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, while promoting a culture of healthy ageing across Europe and beyond. Through a wide array of creative workshops, discussions and field visits, participants explored how ageing can be approached with dignity, care and proactive health measures.
Project Objectives at a Glance
The youth-driven initiative focused on several key goals:
Strengthening communication and cooperation between different generations
Gaining a comparative understanding of healthcare systems in the EU
Promoting better access to healthcare services
Contributing to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with a focus on health-related goals
Supporting cost-reduction in healthcare through preventive health services
Enhancing the implementation of national and EU-level health policies
Encouraging non-formal education for youth empowerment
Strengthening Türkiye–EU relations at both local and regional levels
Engaging with the Community
One of the highlights of the project was the participants’ visit to the Healthy Ageing Center and the Alzheimer and Dementia Solidarity Center of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. There, they spent meaningful time with elderly residents, gaining insights into their lives and the structure of care services provided by the municipality.
They also visited the Healthy Life Center, operated by the Turkish Ministry of Health, where doctors and healthcare professionals introduced them to Türkiye’s approach to preventive and general health services.
From Learning to Action
To wrap up their enriching week, participants produced four short films based on what they had learned. These films reflect their personal takeaways, shared values, and hopes for a more age-inclusive future.
Most importantly, the experience inspired many of the young participants to continue raising awareness and taking action on dementia and healthy ageing in their home communities.
Erasmus+ and Youth Empowerment
This project is a shining example of how Erasmus+ can foster youth-led change, build international solidarity, and create lasting social impact. By connecting young minds across borders and engaging them in real-world issues, the programme continues to support the development of active, informed, and compassionate European citizens.
