From Ideas to Game Logic

A collection of interesting ideas is not yet a playable board game. To become a game, those ideas need a structure: players need to know what they can do, how they move through the activity and what happens after each decision. Game logic connects the different parts and gives the experience a clear direction.

In YouthCoLab, the development process connects research and feedback with the design of game dynamics, rules and a five-step learning journey. The partners need to consider how each stage supports the learning aims and how players interact with the game. Choices should feel meaningful, instructions should be understandable and the activity should keep the group involved.

Game mechanics also influence how participants learn. If players need to discuss a situation before making a decision, the mechanic can support communication and critical thinking. If they must combine ideas, it can encourage cooperation and creativity. The important point is that the gameplay and the learning purpose should support each other rather than feel like two separate activities.

Developing this logic requires careful decisions and later testing. A rule that seems clear to its creators may be confusing to a first-time player. A task may take longer than expected or may not create the discussion intended. YouthCoLab is working towards a structure that is engaging and practical, while allowing feedback to guide improvements before the final version is completed.
